  • PERIODIZATION IN THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH. OE, ME & NE PHONOLOGY
  1. Chronological division in the History of English. Main historical events of the OE period. OE Dialects. OE alphabets and written records.
  2. Specific features of Germanic languages. OE word stress.
  3. OE vocalic system. General characteristics.                                                                      3.1. Qualitative changes:
    1. A-splitting;
    2. I-umlaut (Palatal mutation);
    3. Formation of OE diphthongs: OE Breaking, Palatal diphthongization; Velar mutation (Back mutation ),  Germanic reflexes.

    3.2. Quantitative changes:

    1. Due to rejection of consonants;
    2. Before lengthening consonant clusters.

4. OE consonant system. General characteristics.

    1. Palatalization;
    2. Assibilation;
    3. Assimailation;
    4. Metathesis;
    5. Change of consonant groups;
    6. Loss of consonants in some positions;
    7. Shortening of long consonants in the final position;
    8. West Germanic gemination of consonants.

5. Orthographical changes of the ME period. ME reading rules.

6. ME vowel system. General characteristics.

6.1. Ouantitative changes:

    1. Lengthening;
    2. Shortening

    6.2. Qualitative changes:

    1. Dialect changes;
    2. Monophthongization of OE diphthongs;
    3. Diphthongization
    4. Levelling of unstressed vowels.

7. ME consonant system. General characteristics:

    1. Development of new type of phonemes: affricates and sibi1ants;
    2. New phonological treatment of fricatives;
    3. Vocalization of some consonant phonemes;
    4. Loss of consonants.

  • Early NE Nouns.

3. The Adjective.

  • Grammatical categories of OE Adjectives.
  • The category of declension.
  • Degrees of comparison.
  • Changes in the system of grammatical categories of ME Adjectives.
  • Degrees of comparison. Development of new forms.
  • Early NE Adjectives.

4.The Verb.

4.1. OE verb. Its grammatical categories and morphological classes.

  • Strong verbs. Ablaut.
  • Weak verbs.
  • Preterite-present verbs.
  • Anomalous verbs.

4.2. Development of new verbal grammatical categories and forms in ME and Early NE. The notion of the analytical form.

4.3.Development of the morphological classes of the verb in ME and Early NE.

  • The regular verbs.
