THE FUNDAMENTALS OF GERMANIC LINGUISTICS

 I. The concept of the Indo-Europeans and Indo-European family of languages:

  1. Name old and modern Indo-European languages;
  2. Give the definition of the terms parent language, proto-language, family of languages, genetically related languages and closely related languages;
  3. Produce different points of view concerning prehistorical settlement of Proto-Indo-Europeans;
  4. Explain the concept underlying the first division of Proto-Indo-European language into Western and Eastern branches.

II. Germanic branch of Indo-European languages, basic division. The concept of Proto-Germanic.

  1. Main sources of information about Germanic tribes.
  2. Settlement of the Germanic tribes in the 1 AD.
  3. The age of migrations and formation of Germanic states:

a)   The Visigoths and Ostrogoths;

b)  The Burgundians, the Vandals, the Langobards;

c)   The Angles, the Saxons, the Frisians and the Jutes;

d)  The Franks. Division of the Frankish Empire and its linguistic consequences;

e)   The Époque of the Vikings.

4. Spiritual culture of Germanic peoples: beliefs and mythology.

III. The concept of the comparative method. Explain the terms reconstruction and asterisk.
